Delta Flight Museum unveils exhibition about the life and work of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Lowery

On October 6, 2015, during the 94th birthday celebration of Dr. Joseph E. Lowery in Hanger Two of the Delta Flight Museum, our newest exhibition was unveiled. Entitled Grounded in History, Soaring into the Future, this premiere exhibition for our new rotating exhibition space, examines the life of the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement.”

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1921, Dr. Lowery, who married Evelyn Gibson in 1950, was at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement from the March from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 to giving a stirring Benediction at the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2009. An ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, Dr. Lowery has never separated his spiritual life from

his political life, and in fact he emphatically believes that such a division really does not exist.  Dr. Lowery served as President of the Southern Christian Leadership Council from 1977 to 1997. A constant companion during Dr. Lowery’s work for the Civil Rights movement, his wife Evelyn Lowery not only provided tremendous strength, but also took on many leadership positions of her own.

Grounded in History presents the story of Dr. and Mrs. Lowery through artifacts and images, that provide not only a summary of nine decades of service, but explores the good work that is being done today by the Joseph & Evelyn Lowery Institute for Justice & Human Rights. A highlight of the exhibition is a moving video presentation of Dr. Joseph Lowery.

The exhibition will be on view until the end of February 2016. The next exhibition in this space will focus on the 25th anniversary of the Persian Gulf War.
