Queen Bess: A Bessie Coleman Story
Join us May 25 at 4pm for a workshop presentation of Queen Bess: A Bessie Coleman Story, a new play by Amina S. McIntyre commissioned by Théâtre du Rêve in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Coleman’s death (April 30, 2026). This event is free to attend and will be in English. RSVP required here.
Bessie Coleman lived in the early 1900s as a mixed-race Black and Native American woman. Due to Jim Crow restrictions and gender discrimination in the U.S., she earned her pilot’s license (the first ever earned by a Black woman or a Native American, and the first international license earned by any American) by teaching herself French and then traveling to France to study. More than 100 years later, her resourcefulness and accomplishments tell a story that continues to challenge and inspire.
This project is supported by Georgia Humanities, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, through finding from the Georgia General Assembly and generously hosted by the Delta Flight Museum.
