On January 7, the museum unveiled a new exhibit spotlighting one of the most influential partnerships in modern aviation: Delta Air Lines and American Express. Earning Trust and Miles: 30 Years of the Delta SkyMiles American Express Card features two original SkyMiles cards on loan from the American Express archives—rare artifacts that tell the story of how loyalty, trust, and innovation shaped the airline industry.

Launched in 1996, Delta’s first co-branded credit card allowed customers to earn more miles through the SkyMiles program while strengthening the relationship between the two companies. Over time, the card evolved to include benefits customers have grown to expect, from free checked bags and priority boarding to access to Delta Sky Clubs.
Beyond customer perks, the partnership played a critical role in diversifying Delta’s revenue beyond ticket sales by capturing everyday spending tied to the Delta brand. As Ed Bastian notes, “It’s one of our most important relationships… You put those two things together and incredible magic occurs.”
The exhibit also marks a milestone in the partnership’s longevity, highlighting the 2019 extension of the Delta–American Express co-brand agreement through 2029.
On view now, this compact but powerful display offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how miles, money, and mutual trust helped shape the modern travel experience. This exhibit will be up through April.
